Eugene Weagle

Eugene Weagle - “if It’s not fun, Get Out”

Eugene Weagle, of Salisbury, New Brunswick, and a native of the South Shore of Nova Scotia, lived in Ontario for eighteen years before finally settling down in Salisbury, New Brunswick.

Weagle was asked how he got started in racing. “Just hanging around people and got interested, then my young fella, (Mike Weagle) got into it.”

Weagle was asked if he had ever raced before. “Many times, Street Stock at River Glade, and four cylinders at River glade as well. I’ve had a few crashes and three whiplashes so far”, Weagle laughed.

Piloting the number 60 four cylinder this year, Weagle was asked about his number. “60 is my son’s number from last year. My number was 8. I am a fan of Dale Earnhardt Jr’s so why not. I dug the number 8 out about a month ago, and it still runs.”

Being a twenty year veteran, Weagle was asked about any championships. “Nope, a couple of features, but no championships. It’s all fun for me. If you’re not having fun, you should back out of it.”

Being a River Glade regular in years past, Weagle was asked about accidents. “The fire they had at River Glade. That was when Ronnie Lane’s car caught on fire and he was trapped in it but they got him out OK.”

Funny things happen at all tracks and Weagle recalled one about himself. “Well, my flipping in mid air. I flipped four times. Every time I came down, it was right on my door panel. All you can do is hang on for the ride.”

After an answer like that, Weagle was asked about safety. “Safety is number one. All cars should have a full roll cage like I have. A lot of the guys drive these four cylinders unsafe.”

As for things he’d like to see changed, Weagle replied “ All tracks should have one set of rules. You’d have lots of cars as long as you raced different nights.”

I then asked him the difficult question about the situation at River Glade where he cut his teeth. “River Glade, even if it doesn’t open full time again, should still have the International. It’s an ongoing thing. We just can’t let that die.”
