Bill Vasil - “Because No One Else Would”

Many around the Maritime race scene will probably recall Bill Vasil as the driver of the 20 Sportsman which patrolled the Riverside oval a few years ago. “I came out here one day when I was a child with my dad and I’ve loved it ever since. Eight years ago, when Eric owned the track, I watched Scottie Allen win one of the last races and also that year’s championship. I stopped at his place on our way home and the rest is HISTORY .... I got the bug and bought a car, an old Sportsman car. My first trip around the track was in this car. It was one of the oldest ones, but I had some good people working on it. It was a good car for my first year. The next year I bought one of the best cars which was actually Scott’s (Allen). I won quite a few races and half of the features as well as “Rookie of the Year.”The last year I raced here full time I won the Championship.”

Vasil was asked about how he claimed the number 20. “The very first year we bought the car I wasn’t home when the gentleman who was running the series called to get my car number. My wife gave him the number 20, after HER favourite driver, Tony Stewart. I got home and didn’t have a clue, but that’s not the number I would have picked. I don’t remember what number I wanted now, but that wasn’t it.”

“How did you go from being a race car driver to directing the Sportsman series” I asked him. “The track manager here was looking for a filler for the Pro Stock series, and no one else would do it. Obviously, we had a lot of sportsman cars in the area at that time, so over a six month period, we tossed it around but no one else stepped up. Lynn and I decided we would do it then. I was still driving at the time. It was a challenge so the car lost and we took on the Tour.”

Vasil was then asked how the car count has been. “The car count is fantastic, as far as Riverside goes. This is the premier track in the Maritimes.  Anyone who comes from NASCAR or anywhere just loves this track. The lowest count we’ve had so far is twenty-four but we’ve had as high as thirty six or thirty eight.”

As for the future, Bill stated “I’m not sure if I’ll continue after this year. So many tracks bowed out this year. The co-operation wasn’t what I expected. If it went a little larger, further and wider I might have stayed with it.”

“At this point, I have the bug to get back in the car. I have other personal and business committments at home that have changed my focus as well over the last couple of years so I’d like to just get back into the car.”

“This year we’re only going to two tracks,” Vasil continued “everybody wants to do their own thing. I suppose they are afraid of losing their cars to the series, so due to differences, only two tracks accepted. We’ll be going to Yarmouth twice this year. Hopefully we’ll have a good car count there. With so much racing in the Maritimes this year, many of our cars also race at their home tracks. Hopefully, none of them will wreck before then.”

Sponsorship was the next subject we discussed. “It’s very difficult to get sponsors for the Tours or for the individual cars either. It has changed over the years. I’ve called over a hundred potential sponsors and had response from only a few. NAPA, our main sponsor, Highland Home building centre, who sponsor all the Riverside races with an extra $500.00 bonus for the winner from this track, Apple Auto Glass, Bergengren Credit Union, Sears of Antigonish, R and D Performance, EIT radios, who came back on board this year, and Best Western in Yarmouth are the major sponsors. We have yet to secure sponsors for the Yarmouth races. It’s tough !!!”

Vasil’s final comment was “It’s great to see the fans continue to support all classes, even the way the economy is, with the lifestyles and home committments of today. They turn out to support the track and the drivers. It’s fantastic racing, here in Nova Scotia.”
