Shawn Thompson - “The Coast Tire Connection”

Shawn Thompson, of Fredericton, NB, manager of the Coast Tire store, moved to Fredericton about twenty years ago and got married there.

“Before coming to Fredericton, I drag raced both cars and bikes. When I moved here, a friend of mine owned a stock car, so I got involved with that here at Speedway 660. I’ve raced a half dozen Enduro races myself.”

Thompson went on to say “We (Coast Tire) came on board as sponsors of the Street Stock division, and have been here ever since the track opened. We got into sponsoring a Pro Stock about 10 years ago. That took up a lot of time. Larry Gulliver, the #61 Pro Stock, is taking a couple of years off, but we’re hoping to come back.”

I asked him what was involved in sponsoring a class at Speedway 660. “It’s time consuming. I’m here every week promoting our product, but it’s a lot of fun. You meet a lot of

guys and the drivers. I’ve attended the drivers meetings and enjoyed the fans for the past fouteen or fifteen years.”

With a survey being done a few years ago about the loyalty of race fans and their sponsors, Thompson was asked his opinion on this. “I believe that 100%. The people I see here on the weekend, I see at the store on a regular basis. A lot of these people are my regular customers.”

Thompson has two sons. I asked if they were interested in racing. “ Josh, my seventeen year old, has thought about it but Jesse, who loves facts, figures and numbers, will probably be the one. I brought him here the first time when he was a year old, and he has been coming here ever since.”

With that Thompson headed back to the pits to continue preparations for the day’s events.
