Terry Roma -
Mainly for the Fun of It

Terry Roma, from West Chezzacook, NS, has been around racing for many years. He is now supported by his wife Rosemary and children Julian and Travis. Flockie, his brother, builds his engines and rear ends. “I grew up around the race tracks since I was six years old. My dad took me and my brother Flockie, who is my crew chief and half owner of this car, to Seabreeze and Lawrencetown and ended up starting here twenty one years ago.”

Roma pilots the #38 sportsman at Scotia Speedworld. I asked how he came by his number. “Actually we used to be #83 in my earlier years in Hobby Stocks. When we moved to Street Stocks, the #83 was taken so one of my children sad to switch the numbers around. That’s how we came up with it.”

Being a racer of many years, there must have been a most memorable race. “There is quite a few. There’s stiff competition here. Every race is memorable

as long as you’re not involved in an accident. If you can look back and see how you raced and be pleased with how you did, with the caliber of racing around, every race is a memorable race.”

We went on to talk about accidents. “I had a hundred lap race here and went over the top of the #35 from Antigonish. I hit the wall before my wheels hit the ground. We had a lot of damage but we fixed the car and were back for the next week’s racing.”

There’s been many funny things that have happened around the track so I asked him for one. “There is something that intrigues me. We have a little gopher at our race track all the time and to see him sitting by the wall on the back stretch watching the cars as they race. That’s a pretty cool thing.”

Roma was asked about championship runs. “In 2001, we won the Street Stock Championship after coming second for two years. Then in Sportsman, for three years we finished second then won it last year in 2008.”

Roma was asked about his plans for the future, race wise. “Money wise, it’s telling me NO but down the road, what it takes is a lot of good sponsors, like Doug Forbes, who helps us out. Someone may come along who will help us into a Pro Stock deal but right now it doesn’t look that promising with the present economy. We’re having fun here, my brother and I, and we have a good crew. We don’t pay them but they come through for us every week.”

Roma continued “We’re in third place in the points only six points out of second and ten points out of first. However fourth place is only sixteen points behind us so we’re having a good battle and it makes it interesting for the fans. Winning the Championship last year was good. We are going to do the best we can every week to get the gas money to come back the following week. The best man wins in the end.”

Roma was asked if he had any final comments. “I’d like to thank the fans for showing up every week. Without them, we wouldn’t have a place to play!!!”
