Ron Clarke - On the Business Side

Ron Clarke has been given the endless task of General and Operations Manager of Scotia Speedworld. This is a never ending job.

Clarke, who owns C&R Auto Supply has sponsored a car at Scotia Speedworld for many years. “I’ve never raced myself but I started by sponsoring a car years ago and now also sponsor the Sportsman class. I have known some of the management here for about thirty years. It’s not the racing but the business side that excites me. That’s why I’m in this position.”

Clarke was asked about the possibility of a Truck Series at Scotia Speedworld. “At Scotia Speedworld there are three trucks introduced into the Hobby Stock class now which is exciting. We will probably be phasing the Hobby Stocks out and bringing in the Trucks which will make it more exciting. This will probably be happening next year.

Clarke was asked if there were any major changes coming in the near future

to accommidate the larger crowds and faster cars. “ After twenty three years of watching Scotia Speedworld have its peaks and valleys, I can say “Just Watch US!” I’m taking this to the next level. I can see something here that can be developed into something a lot greater. I have a lot of connections around NASCAR. I have a lot of stuff that’s being held back. It has to be the right moment and time and we must be able to afford it. My dream is to bring it to that level and be the only one of its kind in Canada.”

Clarke continued “ If you look at what we’ve done to the grandstands last year, there are three phases. Just look at the new concrete. That should tell you something. My dream is to have the track larger, and engineered to a different design. I think perhaps in time it will happen.”

“ The cars are getting faster. Drivers are getting more aggressive. We’ve seen what’s happening with the Sportsman. I just can’t figure it out. It’s caused a lot of carnage. We have to find out why that is happening.”

With all the sports out there, Clarke can’t understand the driving force behind racing. “ I don’t have racing in my blood. I have the business end of it in me and can see what it can be. These people, the racers, they don’t do it for the money. It’s the only sport I know that you can come out here and lose every time. The cost of it and the carnage - it’s just incredible. It’s got to be in the blood - the competitive edge, Racing is a whole different sport. Maybe it goes back to the chariots.”
