Terry Roma - A Veteran Racer
Terry Roma, from West Chezzetcook, Nova Scotia, has been racing for 23 seasons. When asked how he got his start, Roma replied “My brother and I started going to the races down at Seabreeze, in Lawrencetown, when I was 6 years old, as a spectator. In 1989, I guess it was, we decided to get a car ourselves. At that time it was the “Dukes” class which later became “Hobbystock”. We started here at Scotia. Then later, in the 90’s, we let someone else drive our Hobby, and I started to drive “Street Stock”. We had a lot of fun with that and met a lot of great people. And here I am, 23 years later, and still going.”
Roma is now driving the #38 Sportsman. When asked if Prostock might be in his future, Roma quickly replied “Had a plan but like everyone else, the problem was CASH. We have great sponsors on our racecar and without them we couldn’t do what we do.”
Being a veteran of 23 years, Roma was asked about his Championships. “In Street stock, we won one championship and runner-up three times. In Sportsman, we won in 2003 and have been runner-up four times. Second isn’t quite as good as being Champion but it’s great. We ran against a great bunch of guys and have fun.”
Accidents are in the profile of anyone who has been racing as long as Roma, and he had a memorable one. “I hit the wall here. I was in the air when I hit it. I fell down to the track really quick. After that I was a little sick. Probably, that was my worst one. I’ve been pretty lucky.”
Moving on to the funniest thing at the track, it didn’t take long for Roma to reply. “The funniest thing I think, is here at Scotia. We have a gopher and he’ll come out on the track, right by the back wall. He just sits there and watches the cars go by. I think that’s pretty cool.”
I asked Roma if he had any comments. “ I’d just like to thank everyone that has helped us out through the years. My brother is my crew chief and there is a great bunch of guys that come up every week and help us out. The other thing is, I’d like to thank my family. If it wasn’t for my wife, daughter and sons’ support, I probably wouldn’t be talking to you right now. They love racing, and supported me getting right back into it, and of course the fans, the more the merrier. I don’t care if they are cheering for me or not, because seeing the fans up there supporting the track, gives us a place to play.Hats off to the great bunch of people running the facility. Some nights they have quite a hard job. There are calls made that you don’t understand but it’s explained later. But it’s worked out and we go out and have fun again.”
