David Reutimann Is Moved by IWK

David Reutimann, from Florida originally, drives for Michael Waltrip Racing in the Sprint Cup Series. “Absolutely, it’s my first time in the Maritimes. I’m having a very good time. I raced in Montreal in the Nationwide series but that’s as close as I’ve ever been before. The track is beautiful and the people are very nice and friendly. I’m having a few problems with the car but that’s the way racecars are.”

Reutimann continued “ But it’s a great facility and track. The people have been phenominal. I can’t believe the amount of motor homes and people here. It reminds me of Martinsville for the volumn of people around here. It’s pretty cool to see that at the short track side of racing. Unfortunately you don’t see that often.”

Reutimann was asked his thoughts on visiting the IWK “It’s tough. I have a seven year old daughter. You see kids that are struggling and going through things. It’s very difficult times for them. It’s humbling to go there and spend time with the kids. They enjoy it but as drivers, we get much more out of it than the kids do. It’s difficult. One of the kids asked me if I ever get scared in a racecar. Man, what they go through is scary, what I do on the weekend is not scary at all. The courage and resilience the kids have ... it’s a good feeling to go there. Although it’s a little sad. The hospital is doing a great job with those kids.”

Returning to the events of the day, I asked what he thought his chances might be. “I dobn’t know. I think we may have a goosd chance. The guys are working real hard and getting the car closer to where we need it. Qualifying may not go so good but hopefully by racetime, we’ll be OK.”
