Andrew Ranger

Andrew Ranger - Champion In the Making

There have been many championship drivers that have come out of “La Belle Province”. Andrew Ranger is the next “up and coming” champion with many accomplishments already under his belt.

I caught up with him at Riverside Speedway during practice for the NASCAR Komat’su 300 in Antigonish. I asked him how he got started. “My Dad was a race car driver and I started racing in a little go-kart when I was nine years old. In Quebec, go-karts were very popular. I won many races and won the championship too, then I moved up here with the NASCAR Canadian Tire series.”

Ranger drives the number 27 and I asked him the history behind this number. “My dad had that number. He drove with that number for a long time and that’s why I have it.”

Being a young driver, Ranger’s accomplishments are amazing and more like those of a seasoned driver.

He was the youngest podium finisher in CHAMP car in 2005. He participated in the NASCAR-TOYOTA All Star Showdown at Toyota Speedway at Erwindale, California. He finished tenth in ten of the twelve outings. His first NASCAR Canadian Tire championship was the most memorable event so far. “In ‘07, my first year in this series, we won the championship. I liked that for Jacombs. It was fantastic. A nice year.”

Ranger has already got his feet wet at a couple of races in the States. “We would like to try, my goal is to be in the “Big Leagues”, Sprint Cup or Nationwide. Right now I’ve done a couple of races but we’ll have to see how the economy is.”

“I hope to hold on and win the Championship this year. We have a great team. we’ve had five wins. My crew chief, Bill Burns, prepares the car well with Dave Jacombs. If we finish in the top ten today, we are sure of the championship.”

The next obvious question was his thoughts on Riverside. “Nice track. I love to race here. With the high banking, we can run two wide, sometimes three, but that’s pretty close. It’s very, very much fun to race here.”

To this reporter, the most impressive aspect of this young man is his involvement in charities. “ I started to be involved in the “Children’s miracle Network” in 2002. We’ve raised $800,000 for them. Some of the kids come to the races, especially in Montreal, with their families. They spend the weekend with us. It’s really a lot of fun and I love to do that. They jump in the car, take my helmet, play with the steering wheel, and buttons. It’s something special to them and makes the program so much more interesting.”
