Last week the Carquest Pro Stock Tour put on an awesome display at Speedway 660. Wayne Smith, the “Oval Outlaw”, threatened to run away and hide in the early going but as track conditions began to change, John Flemming reeled him in, and the two raced side by side for several laps, before Flemming finally put him in his rear view mirror.
Then Mike Stevens, Lonnie Sommerville and Shawn Turple all took a crack at Flemming but to no avail. While this was going on, Shawn Tucker, who had been put to the rear early in the race, slowly but surely crept back through the pack until late in the race, with only a handful of laps left, eight to be precise, Tucker passed Flemming to assume the lead and the victory.
This is not the first time Tucker has come through the pack to win, and shows why he has won the Tour before. Don’t bet on him not winning it again either.
This Saturday, the Pro Stock boys head across the Northumberland Strait to do battle at Raceway Park. The tour does two races at Raceway Park every year, but the first one was rained out. Originally, they rescheduled this race to go on Sunday, with the regularly scheduled race on Saturday, as a double header weekend. However that was rethought and now the race has become a two hundred lapper instead on Saturday evening. This will make an additional extended lap feature on this year’s Pro Stock schedule, but should make for interesting racing on the tight confines of the Island facility.
Meanwhile, the Maritime Legends Tour sees action at Scotia Speedworld Friday evening along with the Sportsman class in the “Shriner’s Classic”. The racing is always tight and exciting at the Halifax facility and this week promises to be no different.
Centre for Speed – River Glade Speedway present the second of their Maritime Sportsman Series 100 lappers at the Shediac facility Sunday afternoon. Danny Bourque has been racing with renewed vigor so far this year and would be my bet to win the second leg of this series.
Speedway 660 is idle this weekend as they start gearing up for their finale, Speed Weekend, on the Labour Day weekend. This one has the Peterbilt 250 as its main attraction and is the third leg of the Triple Crown Series. The second leg of this highly contested series goes next weekend at Scotia Speedworld, with the running of the Atlantic Cat 250. Wayne Smith has already won the first leg, the IWK 250.
Last weekend at Centre for Speed, owner Tim Wile made the announcement that negotiations are almost complete to bring Ken Schrader, a NASCAR star, in for the August 15th Pro Stock Tour race.
It seems more and more like promoters feel they have to have the “big guy” entered to be successful. The fact that the Atlantic Cat doesn’t have one and the Peterbilt 250 has not announced any “imports” yet, leads me to believe that this is not necessary. We have great racing here in the Maritimes and the shows are always exciting anyway so maybe promoters should start rethinking this philosophy.
Congratulations go out this week to Ryan MacIntosh, who finally broke through in the Bandalero class at Scotia last weekend. Congratulations also to Nathan Kelly for winning his “big” race last week. It just goes to show that we produce great racers here in the Cumberland County region. I should also mention that Sandy Livingston Jr. acquitted himself quite well at Speedway 660 last week. Unfortunately, a broken ground strap shut him down with twenty nine laps remaining in the 100 lapper.
Well, that does it for another week. Keep the wheels turning!!!
