I came back from Florida, .... I've always wanted to do something like this so I got some teams together and started (PASS tour) with 8 races and it's grown from there. The PASS North Tour now has up to 28 teams."
Mayberry owns both the PASS NORTH and PASS SOUTH Tours as well as a Modified and Sportsman Series south of the border.
" It's been three years since we started the PASS South Tour. It's still building but has about 18 teams now. A couple of weeks ago, some of the PASS North teams came down and helped us with it. It's starting to develop now."
"I've been real good friends with Cecil (Vance) over the years. I met Cecil when I first raced here. When we first started the PASS Tour, we did 3 or 4 races up here, then down to two, the Forbes 200 and the Atlantic Cat. We're now down to only one race, The "CAT". This is the final year of our three year deal." Mayberry continued "We were down to Riverside for the IWK 250 last year and the Fall before that. That was when they first reopened. This is our only appearance in Canada this year but we're pretty much racing every weekend."
As for the prize payout, Mayberry explained " For this race we bumped it up to a $1000.00 to start, even for the local guys. It's a tough field but a real good quality field."
Fuel and tires are major expenses for any racing team. The PASS tour has really good sponsors in both of these areas. "From day 1, Sonoco has been very supportive. Without them, we would not have survived." Mayberry went on to say "This Spring we started to try and get Sunoco in this area but for now it has fallen by the wayside. American Racer came on with us. They have been behind us since day 1 as well. They do testing for us and we get real good wear from them."
Mayberry turned the conversation to some of his racers. "At this point, Ben Rowe and Travis Benjamin are tied for the lead in PASS NORTH standings but the young guys are coming along. Adam Bates won his first race, DJ Shaw won his first, and Darren Schrumfeld won last week at Star Raceway. So a bunch of young kids are coming along. That makes it pretty exciting."
"I love the people and I love the fans up here. When I raced I enjoyed coming up here and I still do." Mayberry concluded.
