TONY GALLANT
“Never too old to learn”

Tony Gallant, from Bouctouche, New Brunswick, is one of the oldest “ROOKIES” that this reporter has ever encountered. Being curious as to why he entered racing at the age of 68, I sat down to have a chat with him.

My first thought was “How did you get your start in racing.” Tony explained, “A young son of mine always talked about racing and I also came to the track to watch. My son’s friend was looking for someone to drive his car, so I thought I’d go one of these Sundays and see how I make out. I did, and my God, I loved it. I guess I’m the oldest driver in this class.”

Gallant went on to say “Every week it’s a bit different. Our car is not set up right yet and I do

a lot of “lawn cutting”. I cut a lot of people off, not intentionally. I love everybody, and this sport. I’m just learning. I don’t mean any harm to anybody, it’s not on purpose. It’s quite a rush.”

I then asked him about the number 77.  “It’s my friend’s number and his car.

Gallent has a mascot tied to the door post of his car. He explained the reason for this. “My son’s wife said that I should have a mascot on my car because they saw one on another car from PEI, so her friend gave her this. I painted one of it’s teeth so that it looks like “gingevitis.”

I went on to ask the Rookie if he has had any bad accidents yet but his answer appeared to be his funniest moment at the track. “One week, I think if someone had a net, they could have caught my eyes. I made a spinout and I was coming head on with Don Marcoux. My eyes just popped out of my head.”

As for the future, Gallant said, “I plan to race as long as my friend says I can.”
