Colby Smith - Dedicated to Racing

You can talk all you want about dedication, but one person I know is the definition of the word.

Colby Smith, from Cape Sable Island, NS makes the long haul to Scotia Speedworld every Friday night and other special events at Antigonish and Lake Doucette to race his #77 Sportsman machine.

Smith was asked how he got interested in racing. “I built a four cylinder car five years ago and ran it at Lake Doucette Speedway which used to be my “home track. That’s where I started racing. Then I got the Sportsman and starting coming to Scotia Speedworld. I’ve been racing here for three years. it’s a three hour drive one way for me but I haven’t missed a race yet.”

As for Championships, Smith replied “ I’ve won two championships in the four cylinder but none in the Sportsman yet.”

Smith was asked about the number 77. “ I played hockey and baseball and that was my number so I just kept it”

The question about the funniest thing seen at a track usually stumps drivers for a minute. not so with Smith. He replied quickly. “ The fights. I always like the fights. I’m not much of a fighter myself though.”

“ The fire at Antigonish a couple of years ago and then Hughie Richard’s accident a couple of weeks ago were the worst I’ve seen” Smith answered in reply to the “Worst Accidents” question.

Smith went on to say “ I’m working right now at Frank’s (Frank Fraser) garage, putting Hughie Richard’s car back together. We’ve got it just about done. He’ll be out racing again next week.”

In closing, Smith was asked what he would like to see changed in racing. “A track closer to home that I could race on. That’s the only thing I would change. It’s hard to get sponsors home with no racing in the area. They can’t see me race so I can’t get sponsors which makes it hard on me.”

FOOTNOTE:
Colby struck the Winners circle this week at the Atlantic Cat weekend’s Sportsman 100.
