Now that July is underway, things are heating up big time all around the Maritime tracks. The “big” races are upon us pretty near every weekend now including last weekend when a pair of hundred lap Sportsman events took place. Both were very exciting affairs with action from end to end.

At Speedway 660, it was the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman 100 that took centre stage. Unlike many longer distance races where the leaders jump out to a lead and hold on, while the action takes place back in the pack, all the action in this one was at the front, where Michael Banks and the wily veteran Ken MacKenzie  battled it out for almost all 100 laps and Glyn Nott and the “legend” Frank Fraser Senior struggled in vain to catch them. In the end, Banks, MacKenzie, Nott and Fraser crossed the finish line in that order but they were close together.

On Sunday, over at Centre for Speed, Ronnie Lane, who had been conspicuously absent until last weekend down at Lake Doucette, returned to more traditional confines and captured the  Maritime Super Series 100 in fairly convincing style. For Lane the victory was huge and put a big punctuation mark on the 2010 season.

As well, last weekend, the Carquest Pro Stock Tour returned to Scotia Speedworld, where Shawn Turple used his “home track” knowledge to grab the lead on lap one and led every lap for the victory.

This week, Speedway 660, Scotia Speedworld, and Centre for Speed are all running Saturday night events. Speedway 660 holds their second biggest event of the season this week, with a Pro Stock 150 as the feature event. Around fifty of the best Pro Stocks around are slated to show up to do battle for the twenty eight starting spots, including Maritime Tour cars and some PASS Tour cars from the New England area. This should make for some very exciting qualifying heats as well. Just to up the ante a bit more, a guaranteed berth in the Peterbilt 250 on Labour Day is up for grabs as well!

Scotia Speedworld’s event is a bit more subdued with regular divisions doing battle in the “Saturday Night Special”. However, with the large field of cars in all divisions, a Scotia Speedworld card of racing is never short on excitement.

Centre for Speed has a double header on tap this weekend with racing in all divisions on Saturday night and a “roll over” competition as an added bonus. The Atlantic Open Wheel Tour will also be on hand with their brand of “door handle to door handle” excitement. It should be a great event. Then on Sunday afternoon the “MONSTER TRUCKS” invade the Shediac facility for two and a half hours of destruction and Mayhem. These trucks never fail to entertain young and old, and this year seven trucks will be on hand, instead of the normal five truck show. Afterwards, another demolition will take place, and, believe me, these guys are eager and willing to go at it with everything they’ve got.

A bit of disappointment came about this week when it was announced that NASCAR star Reagan Smith would not be entering the IWK 250 next weekend due to an injured wrist suffered a couple weeks ago. NASCAR regular and former INDY racer Marcus Ambrose has stepped into the void left by Smith and has entered the IWK 250. The popular Aussie racer is known as quite the entertainer as well as a very talented racer so things are still on track for the usual great show.

Boy, space goes fast when you’re on a roll but anyway, we’ll talk more about the IWK 250 next week. Until then, go fast and turn left, but keep the racing on the track and not on our streets!!!
