The time has arrived for the opening event at the famed Riverside Speedway, near Antigonish. Two big events are on the schedule for this Saturday, both opening events of their schedules as well.

The Carquest Maritime Pro Stock Tour was supposed to open June 6 in Halifax but the rains washed that one out. It will be made up in late August. This one is called the Ron MacGillivary Chevrolet 100 and a large field of Pro Stocks will be on hand for this one. At least four of the competitors are past champions on the tour, and several others have been competing stateside over the past few months so you can be sure everyone is ready to go. The high banks of Riverside lend themselves to high speeds and fast times so be prepared for a wild ride.

The supporting cast for this one is no slouch either. The newly formed NAPA Sportsman Tour is ready to display its brand of racing for the large crowd that is sure to be in attendance as well. Sportsman drivers from all over the Maritimes are lined up and ready to go in this one. Amherst native Cory Collins is among those vying for a win in this one.

If a “big” show is not in your plans for this weekend, there’s plenty of racing everywhere to whet anyone’s fancy. The action kicks off on Friday night at Scotia Speedworld with all classes except Sportsman in action. The Legends tour has a large field of cars in Halifax, and their action is worth the price of admission alone. The new truck class, although small, has been capturing the imagination of race fans so far with tight side by side racing and close finishes. I suspect that another truck or two may join the battle this week also. The two four cylinder and the Bandalero classes produce some wild action on most nights leaving many fans pumped with excitement.

Another event worthy of mentioning is the “MILITARY NIGHT” at Speedway 660. Every year this event is held and any military personnel is admitted free. The troops pay a heavy price every day, and this is a great way to show your respect for them.

On Sunday, Centre for Speed has a great event on tap. A 50 lap Shediac Sportsman event, the first of this series is slated to be the feature attraction, but a full supporting cast of regular racing will fill out the afternoon nicely. Super Sportsman cars always put on a great show at the CFS oval.

Oyster Bed Speedway, over Prince Edward Island way, and Island Speedway, down Sydney way, are running full cards of championship racing this weekend also. They always put on an exciting event and well worth the trip to their facilities.

Freddy Prosser, the New Brunswick racer with ties to Amherst, has embarked on an odyssey of his own. Prosser will participate in this week’s NAPA Sportsman event at Riverside, and then continue to Newfoundland where he will participate in some races at Thunder Valley.

As this is the Father’s Day weekend, I wish every Father a great day and what could be a better gift than a trip to the track. Can’t go wrong on that one !

That’s it for this week race fans, but remember, pedal to the metal and turn left. Also, keep the racing on the track and not on our streets!!!
