The 2010 season is finally underway. The cold temperatures and deep piles of snow have given way to bright sunshine and comfortable temperatures at last.
Last weekend, the final event of the 2009 Atlantic Championships, the Demolition and Enduro was held at Centre for Speed and it was a good one. Over forty cars showed up for the event and the action was non-stop from start to finish. Even though the event was delayed from last fall till Spring, the enthusiasm of the participants was top notch with cars from Nova Scotia, PEI, and New Brunswick in attendance. The event was run of in a quick time of just under three hours, excellent for this type of event.
This weekend, the 2010 season will get underway as well, with three tracks having their season openers. Scotia Speedworld, down Halifax way, has all classes operating starting at 2pm Sunday afternoon. It is also “car load” day with admission being $20.00 for the car load. It will also mark the debut of the new Truck division at Scotia, replacing the old Hobby Stock class.
Also on Sunday afternoon starting at 2pm, Centre for Speed kicks off their season with Invitational 50 lappers in every class. This should make for some very exciting racing and expect some visiting cars to make the trek to Shediac as well for this one.
This being the long weekend, there is another event on the weekend slate, this time over at the revitalized and refurbished Oyster Bed Bridge speedway in Prince Edward Island. This one is a Monday afternoon affair and is another of the “rock em, sock em” demolition derbies. Regular racing in all classes is also on the schedule for Monday as well.
Every year, I dust off my crystal ball and make predictions on who is going to win what in Maritime race circles this year. Sometimes, I’m right and the rest of the time, I’m wrong. Probably like 20 – 80 (right to wrong). However, It’s always good for a laugh, so, here goes.
Pro Stock Tour: - Wayne Smith will win, Tucker second, Turple third, then either Pierce or Hughes battling it out for fourth. Jerome Kehoe wins Rookie of the Year. AOW Tour: - Shelley Stewart will win, Sparky Raeburn second and Jamie Weston third. Centre for Speed: Super Sportsman: Danny Bourque; Sportsman: Doug MacEwan Scotia Speedworld: Sportsman: Jordan Veinotte wins, Hoss is second; Legends: Vance Hanes takes Billy Keeping to the title; Trucks: Gordon Ritchie repeats as Truck division very popular Speedway 660: Pro Stock: Brian MacNaughton dethrones Greg Fahey in a close battle; Sportsman: Glyn Nott finally puts this puppy to rest in 2010; Street Stock: Rick Cashol wins by closest margin ever over Brian Fox
I also see that another female driver will capture a title somewhere in the Maritimes in 2010 No prediction on Minis and Four Fun, or any other 4 cylinder class. They are not predictable At this point I have dropped my crystal ball and shattered it into a million pieces so my predsictions are at an end.
Well, my time is done, my space is gone and so am I. Remember, keep the pedal to the metal and turn left, but keep the racing on the track and not on the streets.
