Only two weeks remain before the first event of 2010 hits the track, this year at Centre for Speed in nearby Shediac. Although this is not a stock car event in the true sense of the word, Demolition Derbies are always exciting and lots of fun for drivers and fans alike. This one is a carry over from last year’s Atlantic Championships. The event was washed out by rain last Fall.
From what I’m hearing, this could be the largest demolition to come along in many years with rumours of over fifty cars being registered for the event. This will make for a big “payday” for someone. In earlier advertising, Management was hoping for 100 cars or more with $10,000 going to the winner if the field was this large. Even 50 cars pays good money, and I’m looking forward to a great afternoon on the 15th.You should too !!!
The following weekend May 22nd and 23rd, action kicks off at Scotia in a rare Sunday afternoon event with action in all divisions and at Centre for Speed with “Invitational 50’s” in all divisions. The next day, May 24th, action kicks off at Oyster Bed Bridge with action in all divisions and a Demolition to “boot”.
These early season events are always very exciting as drivers try to get rid of the winter rust and get an early jump in the points races.
The month of May ends with another track opening the doors, Speedway 660, with the Riverview Ford Lincoln season opener on Saturday night. Centre for Speed and Scotia Speedworld race on Sunday afternoon again with more regular racing. A “Full Contact 50”is also on the schedule for Centre for Speed making it another “hot” card of racing.
This, for those of you who don’t already know, is the 15th Anniversary for Centre for Speed and owner Tim Wile is promising to “blow the lid of ’er” with one big event after another, all season long. If the first two weeks are any indication, it should be a great year.
Several well known and popular racers at Maritime tracks, Jim and Danny Duke, have decided that 2010 may just be a “resting “ year. Both have indicated that they won’t be racing this year but I’ll reserve judgement on that. Both are dedicated competitors and once the gas and oil fumes fill the air, the “heart” might overrule their heads, and bring them back once more.
In addition to the regular racing at the various tracks, there are now four Touring Series’ operating in the Maritimes. The Carquest Pro Stock Tour is entering their tenth season in 2010. Over thirty of the fastest cars in the Maritimes will be competing for the coveted championship. The Maritime League of Legends is also running a full season of highly competitive action. The Atlantic Open Wheels are also back for another 10 race season of high speed competition.
New to the Touring world is the NAPA Sportsman Super Series. They are running eight races at various tracks around the province with the first one at Riverside Speedway on June 18th.
That’s it for this week folks. Remember, Pedal to the Metal and Turn Left, but keep the racing on the track and not on the street.
