Off the top, an update on the RGS-CFS situation. A quick check with the Sportsman drivers at CFS on Sunday revealed that no pressure to race in PEI instead of River Glade occurred. This is a good thing and a move that will be appreciated by the race community at large. Thus the rumour alluded to last week, was FALSE.
It has been officially announced that Oyster Bed Bridge Speedway will host the “SPUD 100” on September 26th. This event will consist of a 100 lap Sportsman race, a 50 lap Street Stock race, and a 40 lap 4-Cylinder race. This is the first time that Sportsman cars have raced on the Island since 2001, when the SNAP-ON-TOOLS Sportsman Tour made a stop there. It is widely believed that this race will be the forerunner to the changing of the Modified class, to Sportsman. The present Modified class fits about midway between the Sportsman and Pro Stocks and PEI is the only place this class still runs.
It has also been announced this week officially, that the River Glade International will go on September 26th as well. This is the 45th edition of this race and is the oldest race in Eastern Canada and one of the three oldest in Canada. Presently, this race will be 145 laps in 2009 and the Legends, eho also will be racing that day. Are running a 50 lap feature.
Champions were crowned in every division at Centre for Speed last Sunday afternoon. The racing was furious with heart stopping action from start to finish. Side by side racing was more the norm than the exception and three wide stretches were frequent as well. Congratulations to all the champions.
Shawn Turple put the finishing touches on his championship drive last Saturday with a 5th place finish in the Parts for Trucks 200, the final race of the Carquest Pro Stock Tour. This was enough to close the deal on Turple’s first championship on the Tour. Shawn Tucker, two time Tour champion, made a surge in the final race to take the victory, and move into second place in the final standings. Defending champion Wayne Smith, was involved in an accident early in the race and didn’t return until lap 101, effectively ending any chance he had of repeating.
Another “Big” race is on the agenda this weekend, this time down Antigonish way, when the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series makes its annual stop at the Riverside facility. At least nineteen cars will be making the trip to Riverside from all across Canada and they will be joined by local Pro Stock competitor Donald Chisholm, in a car built especially for this race. The Sportsmen and Legends will kick things off with a full slate of racing on Friday night while the NASCAR guys will roll on Saturday. This is the final event on the Riverside 2009 schedule.
Another “Big event coming up on October 17th down at Lake Doucette is a 100 lap Sportsman Invitational. From all appearances, this will bring down the curtain on the 2009 season, since the Atlantic Championships take place on the Thanksgiving weekend , one week earlier.
Well, another week is now behind us and old man winter is starting to blow some cooler temperature our way. Still lots of racing to keep the blood boiling so come on out to the track this weekend.
