The number of events left in the 2010 season can now be counted on the fingers of one hand and two of these are scheduled for this coming weekend.
Down in Lake Doucette, the final event on their schedule goes this Saturday, starting at 1:00 pm. Three big features headline this event with a 75 lap 4 cylinder race, an Outlaw race, where cars from several classes and styles of racing go at it together, and finally a big “Bash for Cash” demolition to bring the curtain down on their season.
Over on the island, Oyster Bed Speedway is hosting a big invitational event to close out their season. Over four hundred laps of racing are scheduled in several classes and highlighting the event will be a 100 lap Sportsman race. Sportsman cars do not exist on PEI but many of the top competitors from Scotia, Speedway 660, and Shediac will be there.
As well, there is a 50 lap Street Stock event scheduled which is attracting interest from all the tracks in the Maritimes. Rick Cashol, champion at Speedway 660, and Mike Francis, runner up at Speedway 660 and this year’s winner of the Racing Spectator “Driver of the year” award are both entered. Over 40 cars are presently entered in the Street Stock event so it should be a wild affair.
The finale will see a chain race, the second ever held on the island. Rules are published on the OBB site but, never having seen one personally, it should be quite exciting.
Over on the Rock, (Newfoundland), at Avondale Speedway, the annual “Chase” has begun to declare their 2010 champions. This consists of a series of races where the top points getters take home the hardware.
Ok, so that’s three events. The biggest and possibly wildest of them all, goes next weekend at Centre for Speed. It’s the annual “Atlantic Championships”, part of Speedweeks at the Shediac facility. For two days, stock cars of several disciplines from all over the Atlantic (yes, I said Atlantic as several cars from Avondale and Thunder Valley are coming to the Shediac oval for this one) will descend on Centre for Speed in hopes of claiming bragging rights to being the “Best of the Best’ over the long winter months. Over one hundred and twenty cars are presently registered to take part in the battles.
Then, on October 16th, the curtain finally falls on the 2010 season when the Monster Trucks invade Shediac. This is a makeup for the cancelled show last summer due to a lack of running trucks after the Maine show the night before. At least six of the big beasts will be on hand to entertain fans of all ages, in a way that only Monster Trucks can.
Oops, better start on the other hand as I forgot all about the other big event involving the Maritime League of Legends. This is a one time deal on October 11th when the Legends Tour invades the road course at Atlantic Motorsports Park, near Schubenacadie. All the talk over the past few weeks has been how to set these little speed demons up for the left and right hand turns and the challenges of a road course. This one could well be worth the time to watch, that’s for sure.
OK so six events are left on the schedule for 2010. That’s all for this week, race fans, remember “Keep the racing on the track, NOT on our streets.”
