The month of September is truckin right along and Mother Nature is doing her best to spoil the party. Scotia Speedworld was the latest victim of the rain last weekend resulting in nine and a half hours of racing on Sunday to wrap up the season. Nevertheless, the racing was exciting and champions were crowned in every class plus the Carquest Pro Stock Tour.
This weekend, the action shifts to the high banks of Riverside as the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series comes to town. JR Fitzpatrick is leading this series by a slim 21 points and hopes to put a little more distance between himself and the rest of the pack before next week’s finale in Barrie, Ontario.
Actually, JR is doing double duty this weekend as he will be challenging the Legend Tour on Friday night as well. Jr Fitzpatrick is not the only challenger this weekend on the Legend circuit either. Chad Windsor is making a return visit to the oval from Capital City Speedway in Ottawa. Windsor was here in July as part of the IWK event, and actually won that event. He was later disqualified in post race tech but this guy can drive. Windsor is sponsored by MacLean Motorsports from Scotsburn, NS this weekend.
Last weekend the AOW Modifieds took their show on the road to Spud Speedway in Caribou, Maine. Two drivers from Speedway 660, Glyn Nott and Brian Fox, took over driving duties for a couple of these machines and from all reports, they had a blast. Shelley Stewart was the big winner in Caribou with a pair of victories, including the feature but Sparky Raeburn took home the big prize, the AOW Modified championship. This was a repeat effort for Raeburn as he was the 2009 champion as well.
Shawn Tucker was the big winner at Scotia, using a third place finish to capture the Carquest Pro Stock Tour title. This was the third time Tucker has climbed the mountain in the tour ranks and earned the Championship without even a victory on the Tour this season.
Mike Francis, the Saint John native, who campaigned all year without sponsors on his car, just the names of those who were killed in Afghanistan, has taken a comfortable lead in the fan voting for the Racing Spectator’s “Driver of the Year.” Francis, who normally campaigns in Fredericton, also made the trek to Oyster Bed speedway on PEI last weekend. Francis wanted to do some testing prior to the big Invitational on September 25th.
Anyway, that’s the scoop for this week. Come on down to Riverside this Friday and Saturday, You’ll be glad you did. In the meantime, pedal to the metal and turn left but keep the racing on the track, NOT on our streets.
