The second leg of the Triple Crown for Pro Stocks goes this Friday and Saturday at Scotia Speedworld. This one is the Atlantic Cat 250 and a large contingent of Pro Stocks are expected to descend on the Halifax facility.
Friday night is qualification night with time trials and heat racing in both the Sportsman and Pro Stock divisions. Then Saturday at 5pm the C&R Auto Supply 100 for Sportsman cars hits the track followed by the Atlantic Cat 250.
This is not the only “big” races on tap for this weekend either. Up at Geary’s Speedway 660, the “Firecracker 150” for Sportsman cars hits the oval Saturday evening. There is no Pro Stock racing at Speedway 660 so that the cars can enter the Atlantic Cat in Halifax, but the speedway is introducing a four cylinder class to the fans this week. This is the first time for the “little guys” and should be exciting.
Sunday, the action shifts to Centre for Speed where a full lineup of divisions is competing along with the “Little Guys 100”. Four cylinder cars from all over the Maritimes are reported to be heading to Shediac for this one on Sunday.
Last weekend, the Carquest Pro Stock Tour ran a 200 lapper over on PEI at Raceway Park (now renamed Oyster Bed Bridge Speedway) again. It was a crash and bang affair with Islander Greg Proude the eventual winner. The cars hit just about anything possible in this marathon, including the Pace Car. From all reports, the racing was fast and exciting as well.
The Maritime Super Series ran its second of four races last weekend at Shediac with Steve Halpin coming home first. It was Halpin’s first victory of the season and couldn’t of come at a better time.
I’ve talked about this before, so this is the last time I’m going to say anything about it. Sandy Livingston Jr., Cumberland County’s lone professional Pro Stock driver is in trouble. Everyone knew it was going to happen and finally it did. The motor let go on the first lap of practice last Saturday, bringing his season to a screeching halt. He has been looking for sponsorship since mid winter but to no avail. It seems that Cumberland County does not care about racing, although the number of Cumberland County residents I see at the various tracks each week, says different. Well, this is it, the test. Is there someone out there that will invest in Sandy’s future or will this be the end of the line for him. It’s up to you now.
Another “big name” is making his way to the Maritimes this Summer. Kenny Schrader, one of the good guys in NASCAR, is coming to Shediac on August 15th, to drive a Pro Stock in the Carquest Pro Stock Tour race at Centre for Speed. The following week, August 21st, Schrader will be at Scotia Speedworld, driving a Legend car in the “Maritime League of Legends” Tour race. All the details of these two visits are not confirmed as yet, but should be released in time for next week’s column.
Schrader is also one of the guest hosts on the SPEED TV show “NASCAR TODAY” and along with Michael Waltrip, is very funny and entertaining.
Well, that’s my time for this week. See you at the “CAT”!!!
