Another weekend has come and gone and with it some extremely exciting racing has played itself out on the ovals at several venues around the Maritimes. This coming weekend will see more of the same as the action heats up this whole month of August.
The biggest stage this weekend will be the Atlantic Cat 250 in Halifax at Scotia Speedworld. All the Carquest Pro Stock Tour regulars will be on hand for this one, the biggest event of the season at Scotia Speedworld. Added to this will be the addition of two PASS Tour stars, Cassius Clark and Ben Rowe. Rumour has it that Johnny Clark may also be making his way to Scotia to compete in this one.
Cassius will be driving the #5 Jonathan Hicken machine as Hicken is committed to other things over on the Island this weekend. The car has been running well, and Hicken has a pair of podium finishes in his last two races to prove it.
Ben Rowe, the likeable American driver, has committed to driving the #10, for Steve Henderson, of Rand D, located in Truro. Henderson is the main sponsor of Shawn Turple’s Pro Stock machine, and the Rowe car is actually a sister car for Turple. Turple has run both cars over the course of the season and is currently leading the Carquest Tour points battle.
Turple is the defending Tour champion, and would like to make it two in a row, but the multi time champion, Wayne Smith, who won at Oyster Bed last weekend, has closed in on Turple and has set his eyes on adding another championship to his long list of accomplishments.
When you add the defending champion of the “Cat 250”, Lonnie Sommerville, into the mix, you have the making of a real “dog fight” for the victory. It should be an epic battle.
A large field of Sportsman machines are also lined up to run the support class for the event. Their race is a 100 lapper, a full feature on any given night.
The event is a two day affair with all qualifying in both classes going on Friday night and the two big shows running on Saturday.
There is another big event associated with the Atlantic Cat this year. After the racing has concluded on Friday night, an auction will be held to raise money for the Maritime Motorsports Hall of Fame. This is the brain child of Mike Kaplin and Jim Hallihan, two names that need no introduction around racing circles. The auction will consist of the rights to Pro Stock cars in the big race. If the car you hold the rights to captures the Atlantic Cat, you can pick up a healthy piece of change. As well, the Pro Stock drivers have worked hard to pick up products and memorabilia from their sponsors and supporters to be auctioned off as well. This should be an event well worth attending.
While all this is going on, action continues on several other fronts this weekend. At Speedway 660, one of the biggest Sportsman events of the season, the Firecracker 150, is taking place. This one always attracts a large and very stout field of cars from all over, and this year’s edition should be no different. A full slate of support action will round out this exciting evening.
Added to this is the only stop of the Atlantic Open Wheel Tour at Speedway 660 this year. Last weekend’s event at CFS was a great one with the Prince Edward Islander, and only woman on the AOW Tour, Shelley Stewart grabbing a pair of wins and vaulting to the top of the Points Championship standings in the process. Her closest pursuer, defending champion Mike “Sparky” Raeburn, will no doubt be going all out to regain top spot in the standings. Centre for Speed is also running their weekly show at the Shediac oval this weekend, on Saturday evening. A full slate of points championship racing is on tap in this one. The warm breeze off the Strait adds to the enjoyment of racing at this facility.
Points championship battles are also continuing at several other tracks in the region so no matter where you live in the Maritimes, there’s action near you. Come on out and join us.
That’s a wrap for this week race fans. Remember, keep the pedal to the metal and turn left, but keep the racing on the track, and NOT on our Streets !!!
