Well, it’s finally here, the IWK weekend at Riverside Speedway, I mean. If you’ve never been there before, it’s time you did. It’s one of the four biggest weekends of the year in Maritime race circles, and certainly one of the most exciting.

The weekend kicks off on Friday night with an event that could well be a feature event on its own, but this time, it’s only a precourser for Saturday. Two classes of cars are involved in the Friday night event with both the Legends Tour and NAPA Sportsman Super series taking part. Both classes have large car counts and the action begins on turn one of the first lap and doesn’t stop. Actually, the last time the sportsman hit Riverside back in June, they ran 50 green flag laps without a caution in a record setting time of fourteen minutes and twenty-six seconds. This time it is a one hundred lapper, but the action is expected to be just as intense. The Legends, scale model replicas of cars from the thirties, run 50 laps and non stop action is always their forte.

Camping is available at the track if you are so inclined and Saturday the high powered Pro Stocks are all on the track all day for practice sessions which make great photo opps and then there is a “Meet and Greet” session on the track in the late afternoon. NASCAR star Marcus Ambrose will be on hand for conversation and photos as well. Marcus is a replacement for Reagan Smith who was hurt a few weeks ago and couldn’t make it.

The race itself is 250 laps of high powered, heart pounding excitement that by times will leave you breathless. All the big guns from the Pro Stock tour as well as Ambrose and others who become surprise entrants, so look out. It’s going to be great.

Last week was going to be a banner weekend at tracks all over the Maritimes but Mother Nature stepped in and ordered the weekend off. The heavy rainfall was unwanted but what ‘cha gonna do.

If big crowds and wild races are not your thing, there is lots of racing for everyone at other tracks as well. Scotia Speedworld is running their “Twins” night on Friday with action in Thunder, Lightning, Truck and Bandelaro classes. Several 50 lappers are scheduled as feature events in this one and they should be exciting.

On Sunday afternoon, Centre for Speed is offering a bit of excitement as well with 50 lap features in Mini Stock, Street Stock, and Super Sportsman divisions. The track at Shediac generates some very exciting action and this one should be well worth attending.

Last week’s “Monster Truck” show on Sunday at Centre for Speed became a “no-show”. The seven truck event, first shrunk to six trucks when one driver incurred a death in the family. Then came a dreaded call that several of the trucks had broken down at a show in Maine the day before so they would only have three trucks. Track owners Tim and Susan Wile wisely decided that this was not suitable nor what their fans had paid for, and cancelled the show. Attempts are being made to reschedule the show for sometime in August but as of now, no firm date has been announced. Too often, promoters would have tried to slide the number of trucks off and go with the show anyway, and I applaud Tim and Sue for having the courage and consideration for their fans to just say “NO”. Caring about your supporters is a cornerstone of success and the Wiles have proven that they do care !!!

Well, that’s it for this week, race fans, we’re off to the tracks. Remember, keep the pedal to the metal and turn left, but please, keep the racing at the tracks, and not on our streets.
