The stock car season is approaching the midway point of the year this weekend and to this point at least, the action has been wild, exciting, and very entertaining to say the least. Every track has had great battles shaping up for points championship titles and the big events have delivered at every level. Most of the tracks have had good attendance numbers and great car counts.
Although this is a “holiday” weekend, at least in some parts of the Maritimes, the racing is not taking any time off. Friday night, the action starts with another card of points championship racing at Scotia Speedworld. All the races are tight with new leaders possible after every event.
Next weekend, the big boys are back at Scotia Speedworld for the Atlantic Cat 250. All the Pro Stock guys will be there and PASS Tour regulars, Ben Rowe and Cassius Clark are coming to town as well. This one should be a “barn burner” and the Sportsman 100 will act as the supporting card in this one.
Saturday, the action takes place on two fronts. Oyster Bed Speedway, over on Prince Edward Island, plays host to the Carquest Maritime Pro Stock Tour for the second and final time this year. Last time, local hero, and fan favourite Jonathan Hicken, grabbed the victory, to the delight of the hometown crowd, and a large crowd is assured for the return engagement. Can Hicken repeat, or will one of the other Island racers rise to the occasion and take home the big prize? Only time will tell, but if I were a betting man, my money would be on Chris Hughes. Hughes has had some great runs so far this year, but has not won. I think maybe the home turf and the large crowd might spur him on to victory.
Shediac’s Centre for Speed has a double header on tap for this weekend with racing on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday features the “Little Guys 100”, and these are always full of action from start to finish. Can Martin Landry continue his mastery over this class? I think so and the likeable driver, who always has a smile on his face, just loves to wave the checkered flag after a race.
Coupled with the “little Guys” is the fifth instalment of the Atlantic Open Wheel Tour. These guys are very evenly matched and put on a great show. The crowd at Lake Doucette last weekend can attest to that. I look for Mike “Sparky” Raeburn to give everyone all they can handle but you can’t count out Mark Price or Joe Hoyt either. All three have been having banner years.
Sunday is eight cylinder day at Center for Speed as the high-powered Street Stock (Shediac Sportsman) and Super Sportsman classes take their turn at 100 lappers. A lot of visiting cars from Fredericton, Saint John and Sydney are expected to vie for wins against the local contingent which means some very good heart pumping excitement is in store. Action begins on both days at 3pm.
Centre for Speed has also announced a reschedule date for the “Monster Trucks” to ply their wares at the Shediac oval. October 16th is the date and is coupled with the final Demolition event of the season as part of the Atlantic Speedweeks event at the facility.
Speedway 660 is taking this weekend off before they head into the biggest part of their schedule. Several big events are in store at the Geary oval, culminating with “Speed Weekend” and the “Peterbilt 250.
Well, that’s it for this week, race fans. Remember, “Pedal to the metal and turn left, but keep the racing on the track, and NOT on our streets”
