Marie Brown - “Family Racing

Marie Brown, from Antrum, NS, has been around racing most of her life. “My father raced a lot of his life. He raced a lot on the Island, then we moved over here. He decided , after seeing his friends’ sons go-kart racing, that it would be good for us. We began to go kart racing, and progressed from there. I’ve won some go-kart championships.”

Marie continued “ I have the number 93 in Sportsman because that was my father’s number for five or six years.

Being of the female sex, Marie was asked how she was perceived by the other racers. “ I’m treated like one of the guys most of the time. It doesn’t take long for them to realize that I’m no different.”

Brown was asked if she had any expectations of moving up a class. “ I’m going to stay put in Sportsman for a while. We definately don’t have the money to be top ten running in

Sportsman as it is. So right now, we’re just going out to have fun. Maybe someday we may get the money and then consider it. You never know.”

Keeping it in the family, Brown has a full pit crew. “My crew is my father and brother. My mom helps out a little bit but she mostly baby sits my son these days. We have a couple of other crew members, but it’s basically just family.”

Marie experienced a frightening accident early in life. “My worst that I experienced was my first year racing go-karts. Go-karts have no roll cages. I came out of the corner. You brake going in and hit the gas coming out. The go kart in front of me did the opposite. He slammed on the brakes when I hit the gas. I actually ran up over him and left black marks on his helmet from my tire. I few more inches and it would have been a lot worse.”

Brown was asked if something should be changed in racing and what would it be. “The money part of it or more support from companies. The worst thing is that it’s such a family orientated sport. My father raced for twenty-five years and I’ve been racing fifteen now. My brother, who drives the number 80 truck, has been racing four years. My son is two years old and he can change tires on my race car. He’s been coming since he was two weeks old, in the stands with my mother. So I wish the money side was different.”
