Mike Bravener – Elvis Lives at Speedway 660

You never know who you are going to meet at the races. You meet people from all walks of life. Today, I met my first “ELVIS”. Mike Bravener, from Fredericton, NB, can be seen every Thursday night at “Frank’s Finer Diner” in Fredericton.

Bravener was asked what brought him to Speedway 660. “I was asked. I perform every Thursday night at Frank’s Finer Diner. The classic car guys meet there on Thursday nights. I was talking to some of them about getting my daughter a ride for her prom and before I knew it, I got a phone call asking me how I would like to sing the Anthems out at the Speedway. I said, “I’d love to. I haven’t had a chance to go there.” I used to go to the races back when they were in Douglastown, but it’s my first time here.”

The next big question was “How did you become an “Elvis” impersonator. “I used to work in the church as a pastor and I wanted to meet people who didn’t go to church so I started doing singing telegrams. I had a “hillbilly” guy

and a “nerd” guy. Then one summer while on vacation, I went to the Elvis festival in Collingwood, Ontario, which is the largest Elvis festival. I saw all these guys dressed up as Elvis, tall, short, fat, skinny, bald and hairy. I saw them all. I thought this was the most entertaining thing I had ever seen.

Bravener continued “I bought an Elvis wig to bring home and started doing Elvis as part of my “Singing Telegram” act. From that, I got hired at Frank’s Finer Diner. Then I started getting hired for parties and events. I got a good wig, some make up, and Elvis costumes. ‘

“ Seven years ago this month (August), I made the transition from full time clergy to full time entertainer. It’s taken all up and down the Eastern USA, a trip to Acton, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and PEI last year.”

“Last year I entered a competition where there were over three thousand people, who tried to win a spot to compete in Memphis, Tennessee for the “Ultimate Elvis Competition”. We had to send a video into the judges from Regent Entertainment group. They selected my tape number one for the competition. They flew me down to Memphis for seven days, all expenses paid. I competed in the competition and was selected in the top twenty for 09-10. A thrill of a lifetime.”

“ I’ve never sang the National anthems before. This is my debut. This is a wonderful facility and the people who have never been here should really come out.”

Bravener prepared to leave to sing the anthems. As he was leaving, he turned and said, “in an Elvis voice, “I’m so nervous, I’m shaking like a leaf”
