April 5th

I'm back!! The winter blues will soon be replaced with the roar of squealing tires and gasoline-oil smells that are the essence of racing. This is music to my heart and I can't wait.

There have been some changes around the Maritimes but none bigger than the creation of the "NASCAR North Canadian Tire Series". While popular opinion has this as little more than a re-working of the old "CASCAR" tour, the involvement of NASCAR will make it exciting.

What makes it noteworthy in the Maritimes is that one of the races will be run here, or at least two hours away at Riverside Speedway, just this side of Antigonish. Several drivers that were performing in other classes have joined this one, making it a truly great affair. With events ranging from British Columbia to Nova Scotia, it is a truly national series as well.

While we're on the subject of Riverside, they have elected not to run a weekly show this year, but are concentrating their efforts on five major races: three Maritime Pro Stock Tour events, one Pro ALL Star Series event and the NASCAR CanadianTire Series event. A sixth event, a Sportsman affair, is also in the planning stages. They have established a Riverside Sportsman Super Series to run the undercard at each event.

Centre for Speed has created a Sportsman Super Series as well with eight races in its schedule. They also have a Late Model Sportsman Series (ProStocks with crate engines) running a five race series at the Shediac oval.

Riverglade Speedway has added the Legends to its offerings over the course of the summer along with the Atlantic Nationals Burnout competition, two motocross events and the granddaddy of them all, the 43rd Riverglade International.

Scotia Speedworld is once again running their regular shows on Friday nights with their Pro Stock, PASS, Atlantic Cat, and special Sportsman events taking place on Saturdays.

Finally, the crate engine has gained recognition at all the Maritime tracks as more and more drivers recognize the long term benefits and savings in a sport where costs continue to far outweigh the winnings.

NASCAR BRIEFS

In NASCAR ranks, it appears that Jeff Gordon has made it back from the doldrums with some strong runs so far. Defending champion Jimmy Johnson so no signs of giving up the title easily however. Dale Earnhardt Jr continues to struggle with his rides although some signs of life have been seen lately.

The biggest disappointment of the NASCAR season so far is the failure of Toyota to perform up to expectations and in particular, the performance of former Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip to qualify since Daytona.  Actually, none of the drivers has done well to this point, leaving one to wonder if Toyota was ready to make the jump.

At any rate, that's all for this week. Gentlemen, Soon you can Start Your Engines.

April 12th

Well, Easter has come and gone and all the chocolate bunnies have conspired to put a few more pounds around my waist but with each passing day we get closer to opening day on the race tracks of Maritime Canada.

Although not all the tracks have released their schedules yet, it's a sure bet that Shediac's Centre for Speed will be first off the mark this year. Opening day, (weather permitting), will be May 13th with some big time action slated to go

The Sportsman Super Series at the Centre is slated to run a 75 lapper, the first of 8 races in this series. The speedy oval on the Northumberland shore is quick, and the Sportsman bunch love to crank it up there.

Also on the card is the first of 5 races in the Late Model Pro Stock Series at the Shediac oval. While still a tentative deal, hinging on the securing of at least 15 entries (over ten have signed up at present) it looks like this is a go. Crate engines will be the norm in this series although other Pro Stocks will be able to compete with some handicaps.

A full slate of Street Stocks, Thundercats and Tigercats will round out the opening day festivities. They call the Street Stocks the "sideways sliding, door handle to door handle, crash and bang" boys and they come by this honestly. There aren't many dull   The following weekend is a flurry of action with season openers at Scotia Speedworld, Riverglade Speedway and New Brunswick International Speedway along with another full card at Shediac.

NBIS has the "BIG" show on this weekend as the PASS tour (Pro ALL Stars Series) from the New England states bring their high powered Pro Stock machines to the Geary woods for their first of 4 Canadian visits in 2007. These guys are fast and feature some top stars such as Ben and Mike Rowe,( a father and son team), Scott Chubbock, and of course, the very popular Johnny Clark. Track records are always in danger when these guys are around. A full field of Street Stocks and Sportsman will round out this card as well.

If you need something to keep you going until May 13th, why not take in the Radical Speed and Sports Extravaganza in Moncton April 20th, 21st and 22nd at the Colliseum. Over 225 street rods, race cars, dragsters, motorcycles and custom builds will be on display. In addition, former NASCAR star Terry LaBonte will be there Saturday from 4pm til 6pm talking to fans and signing autographs and the film star "Lightning McQueen" from the movie"Cars" will be on display. Many other events make this a great weekend.

NASCAR BRIEFS

It sure looks like the Hendricks Motorsports team have a leg  up on the competition this year. The dominating performances of Jeff Gordon, Jimmy Johnson and Kyle Busch show no signs of slowing down. Although last week was an off week, they swing back into action at Texas Motor Speedway this week and Phoenix the following weekend. Don't bet against these guys to show up in the winners' circle again.

Michael Waltrip's troubles just keep on coming. Last weekend, he fell asleep at the wheel about a mile from his home, hitting a telephone pole and rolling the car. He left the scene and walked home, and has been charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident. He was unhurt, except for a few scratches and bruises.

Well, that's it for this week, get ready for the famous words, GENTLEMEN, START YOUR ENGINES.
