Arbeau interview

Josh Arbeau - “Family Comes First”

Josh Arbeau, from Burton, NB, has frequented the race tracks since around the age of eight. “My step-dad, Gerry Trembley, raced here for years in car 61, street stock, and it progressed from there.”

Josh started out racing go-karts. “We’ve raced everywhere from Quebec to Homestead, Florida. We had a few podium finishes in Florida and won two Kart championships here at the Speedway. We came back up here and raced Sportsman for a few years after that, so I decided to come back here with Brian Fox’s car. It’s a stellar car. I’m just excited to go racing again.”

Arbeau was asked about his choice of car number. “The number is the year that my mother and step-dad were both born. They lost their lives five years ago so now its in memory of them.”

Arbeau’s accomplishments, although he was won no championships, is something other drivers should be aware of. “ I only raced one season as a rookie. I won a few heats, but no features in Sportsman.” He has had three feature wins and some top 5’s in Street Stock.

Arbeau has no plans to move up the ladder again. “Street Stock is cost effective and very competitive. For the extra two seconds per lap, the Sportsman are not worth the cost and aggravation. I have one full time person to help me. To move up I’d have to be paying others to help.”

With this economy today, many drivers are having trouble securing sponsors, but not so with Josh Arbeau. “ I’m very fortunate. I work at Auto-Pride in Fredericton. We have a lot of loyal customers. Many own companies and fleets and are kind enough to come on board. MacDonald’s supplied my race suit. Don Stern Service and Maintenance and 92.3 FM, the radio station are my main sponsors. Without them, I wouldn’t be here.

Although Arbeau couldn’t think of anything funny, he could recall an accident. “Hal O’Neal, here on Speedweekend, was the scariest accident I’ve seen except on TV.”

Arbeau was asked if there was something he would like to see changed in racing. “Probably, the NO Fault rule. It’s a shame that someone who is leading a race loses the lead because the second place car can get a little rowdy and spin him out. Some days it works to your advantage but some days it hurts you. But its something I’d like to see changed. I understand and respect the track, because it’s a hard decision by times.”

Arbeau was asked if he considered racing at other tracks. “As long as nothing else is going on Thanksgiving weekend, I might consider going to Shediac. But, it’s FAMILY FIRST.”

Arbeau closed by thanking his wife Andrea , all his sponsors, and of course the fans.
