Until now, the race season has been a battle between “Mother Nature” and the “Race Tracks” with “Mother Nature” winning several times. I’ll bring you up to date.

At Speedway 660, opening day was a rainout, after sitting in the rain, drizzle actually for almost four hours. Week two saw some very exciting racing in all five classes. Perennial contenders Rick Cashol, Glyn Nott, and Greg Fahey all claimed victory on opening day, signifying their intentions to take another run at their respective championships. Week three was the annual visit from south of the border, of the PASS Tour and defending champion Johnny Clark claimed yet another win at the Geary oval. Cashol and Nott both finished second in their respective divisions while newcomer Benji Ruff, a former Enduro champion, took the measure of Cashol, and Brent Roy recovered from mechanical problems the week before, to capture Sportsman honours. This week, all five divisions are back at it on Saturday, but “Mother Nature” appears to be planning some interference with this.

Scotia Speedworld got their season underway with the Pro Stock Tour being the main attraction. Defending champion Shawn Tucker captured the event although John Flemming dominated most of the affair. Regular points racing got underway the following week, with the usual large field of competitors in attendance. The big surprise of the night occurred not on the track, but in the pits, as Terry Roma, who has Well, another season is underway, and our move from the historic village of Wallace, NS, back to Springhill, Ns is finally complete. My columns should have started a few weeks ago, and I apologize for that, but at last, we’re back.

Up been battling cancer for a couple of years now, was released from hospital after another round of treatments on Friday, and showed up at the track on Sunday, ready to race. He competed strongly as well. Hopes are high that Roma might be winning his personal battle. Nothing has happened since though, at Scotia with a rainout the next week, and the Monster Trucks there last weekend. Round two is slated for this Friday evening, and the weather looks good for this event.

Shediac’s Centre for Speed has been stepping though the rain so far with both scheduled events being run on time. Week one saw the Maritime Sportsman Tour get off the ground and Calvin Rankin led all 100 laps, to win this one. Week two saw the AOW Modifieds hit the oval, with John Godfrey capturing the win in impressive style. This week, the regular boys are back to put on the show and it should be a good one.
While I’m speaking of “Centre for Speed”, it should be noted that management has done major repairs to the facility, including a reconfiguration of the racing surface, making it much tighter racing in all classes.

After sitting idle for eleven years, Petty Raceway near River Glade, is back in action and hosted their opening event two weeks ago, to a near capacity crowd. Three classes took part in the action, headed up by the Pro Stock Tour and AOW Modifieds Tour, with the “4 Cylinder class” as support. Wayne Smith, “the Oval Outlaw”, and one of the track owners, took home top honours for the Pro Stocks, much the same as he did in the last race held there 11 years ago. Who says you can’t go home again! Paul Costain got the AOW season underway with the first feature win of his AOW career. Their next race is July 1st, when the Sportsman headline the event and “Paul Riddell’s Hell Drivers” entertain. This should be a great show!

Riverside International Speedway, just this side of Antigonish, opens their season this Saturday with the Pro Stock Tour and the NAPA Sportsman Tour being the main events. This place always puts on a great show!

Last, but by no means least, is Oyster Bed Speedway over on PEI. They have been running regular racing so far this year, with three events already in the books. All reports have it that the shows have been exciting to watch and this week promises to be more of the same.

That covers it pretty well, up to now, but another chapter is due to be written this week. Why not come out to a track near you. You’ll be glad you did.
