Another week is in the books and the end is almost in sight. The show in Riverside last week was excellent. The organization was perfect and the drivers were intent on putting on a great show. The facility was in its usual state of greatness and all in all it was very entertaining. Well worth the slightly heavy admission price, that's for sure.
Twenty three teams showed up ready to race, with cars from as far away as BC and Alberta in the line up. Local performer Donald Chisholm gave a spirited performance until steering problems cost him several laps. He came back and finished a very respectable 14th in the end. These guys have quarter million dollar budgets and it just shows you that our racers are second to none.
A special program is being offered at Centre for Speed this Sunday with the Atlantic Open Wheels in attendance. The last time out for the Open Wheel guys was very exciting and entertaining at Speedweekend in Geary. Their feature went 35 laps with no cautions. The big knock against these guys has always been the abundance of cautions but this seems to be a thing of the past now. The cars are all built equal and when they are right, they put on a great show. Regular race divisions at the Centre round out the day's events.
Last weekend River Glade offered up their twice cancelled Demolition event to a loud and boisterous crowd. The action was good from the opening flag to the final checkered one and I don't know when I've had so much fun at a racetrack. A special event occurred just prior to the main Demolition when young Andrew Muir took a specially prepared car and jumped it into the pond which adorns the centre of the infield. Muir then took his demo car and won the demolition. Afterwards he headed this car directly toward the pond and jumped it into the water as well. The crowd cheered wildly at this point.
My hat is off to street stock competitor Tim Layton as well. An elderly gentleman was at the track gate saying that he had always wanted to drive in a stock car. Layton, after winning the street stock feature, obliged and took the elderly gentleman on an extended drive to the pits and around the track a couple of times. He also gave him the trophy he had just won. Layton certainly earned my respect in a hurry after that move.
River Glade Speedway has announced that they are cancelling the final event of their season, citing poor weather and cool temperatures as the reason. They promise to be back next season with bigger and better things to offer the faithful.
Plans are progressing nicely for the Centre for Speed people towards their annual Atlantic Championships. This event occurs on the Thankgiving weekend every year and this year it is October 11th and 12th. As all the other tracks and Tours are shut down by this point, a huge field of cars from all over the Maritimes converges on the CFS facility. The racing is very keen as everyone wants to put the Atlantic Champion title on their list of accomplishments. The Prostocks and Sportsmen go on Saturday while the Street Stocks and Mini Stocks go on Sunday. This is definately a "not to miss" event to be sure.
That's it for this week, race fans. Why not join me at a track near you.
