HUGE CAR COUNTS AND CROWD ON HAND FOR OPENING NIGHT OF THE LOCKHART WEEKLY RACING SERIES AT SCOTIA SPEEDWORLD
Halifax, NS, May 30, 2008 - The Lockhart Truck Center Weekly Racing Series saw great weather and an even better audience for its opening races of the 2008 season at Scotia Speedworld. The huge Friday night crowd came to check out the action on Q104 Rock & Race Night where all six divisions took to the track in the quest for the first checkered flags of 2008. Q104 was on hand to announce the launch of the Naughty or NASCAR promotion which will see one lucky winner and a guest win a VIP trip to a NASCAR Sprint Cup race in September.
The Bandolero Division kicked off the night with an exciting 12 lap feature on the inner oval. The caution flag flew three times throughout the race that saw DJ Casey victorious. The number 14 and 92 cars, Dylan Bleckhorn and Brandon Niles, put up a good fight and finished second and third respectively. The 2007 defending Champion Shelby Baker brought home a fourth place finish. Emily Meehan, one of only two female drivers in the Lockhart Weekly Racing Series finished off the top 5. Brandon Niles and Brad Eddy won the heat races.
The Miller Tire/BF Goodrich Lightning Division saw Dan Smith take the lead early and maintain the position throughout the race to capture the victory. Lee Cobb and Russell Smith came second and third. Mike Sexsmith came in fourth place. On the last lap Dan Michaud rallied to take 5th position.
In the brother series of the Lightning Cars, the Miller Tire/BF Goodrich Thunder Division had 26 cars racing for the first checkered flag of the season. Derek MacCallum led the first half of the race until Jeremy Hallett and David Hibbs pulled ahead. Jeremy Hallett ended up with the win. David Hibbs pulled out second…. while racing with a cast on his leg! Derek MacCallum came away with the final podium position. Kyle Gammon and Matt Scott rounded out the top five.
The Wallace Equipment Hobby Stock Division had a slow start with two cautions before the completion of the first two laps. Terry Moore and Mark Wilson ran first and second for the first half of the race. During lap 16 of the 25 lap race, Mark Wilson took the lead and held on for the win. Mike Alexander and Terry Moore followed Wilson over the finish line. Brandon Watson and Alex Johnson came in fourth and fifth. Scott Thibodeau and Terry Moore won the heat races.
The Legend Division had 22 cars out for opening night. Vance Hanes sat on the pole although he didn’t hang onto the position for long; Cy Harvey took over the 3 car early in the race. Ian Mullins was able to out run Harvey to claim the checkered flag. Harvey held on for second while newcomer Darren Sherwood had a very respectable third place finish. Justin MacNeil and Geoff Bevan completed the top five.
The Main Feature of the night – the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman Division – closed out an exciting opening night of the Lockhart Weekly Racing Series. Tony Leonard started on the front row, quickly pulling away and maintaining the lead until the 23rd lap, when he spun out Rick Akles to force a caution with two laps to go and he headed for the pits. After the reline, Terry Roma crossed the finish line first. Jason Brown and Harry Rosswhite fought for second, Brown winning that battle. Craig Doggett and Carmen Comeau completed the top five.
The next Lockhart Truck Center Weekly Racing Series event is Wallace Equipment Night on Friday, June 13th.
