Another weekend is almost upon us, with "big" events abounding all over the Maritimes. The number one draw would have to be the "Atlantic Cat 250" at Scotia Speedworld, a two day affair that runs Friday night and Saturday. Most of the top running Pro Stocks are entered in this event along with the New England PASS tour top runners. This will make for some fast, exciting racing on the tight confines of Scotia. This is the only stop for the PASS tour in the Maritimes this year, although we have seen several of the cars at the two "Best of the Best" events at Speedway 660 and at the "IWK 250" at Riverside. At both events, it was obvious that our Pro Stocks have caught up to the New England Tour in performance which augurs well for a strong race this weekend.
Friday night the C&R Auto Supply 100 is the feature event on the card. This event always draws a strong field from all over the Maritimes and this year will be no exception. Sportsman racing is one of the most exciting classes performing in the Maritimes with lots of passing and side by side action to keep fans on the edge of their seats the whole way.
The Thunder and Lightning divisions will provide undercard action along with the dash and heats of the Pro Stocks Friday night while Saturday night, the Bandelaros, Hobby stocks, and Legends will provide the support action along with an autograph session on the track. All in all it is a great event not to be missed.
Speedway 660, near Fredericton, NB also has a "big" event scheduled this weekend with action taking place on Saturday evening. The Firecracker 150, for Sportsman cars, is the main fare in this one with support action from the Pro stock and Street stock divisions. A large field of cars is also slated to take part in this one as well, so catch the action if you are in the Fredericton area this Saturday.
Shediac's Centre for Speed also sees action on Saturday evening with the return of Points Championship racing to the Speedway. After a couple of weeks off, expect the action to be hot and furious as teams vie for the all important end of the season championship. The kids have not been forgotten either with several giveaways and contests for the youngsters on the schedule. The next weekend is also going to be wild in Shediac, when the Monster Trucks invade the Centre for Speed facility. They always put on a great show and these big rigs can really move.
Mark next Sunday August 17th on your calendars as well. The 44th annual running of the River Glade International takes place at the Maritime's oldest, continuously operated speedway. The race has had winners that resemble the "who's who" of racing in Canada and this year surely will be no exception. The race has a variable distance of 100 laps plus 1 year for each anniversary of the race so this year it is 144 laps.
Oops, I almost forgot. Saturday August 16th is a big day at Riverside as well The "Parts for Trucks" 100, renamed the Scott Kelly Memorial in honour of the former Maritime race star, is on tap. The Highland Sportsman Super Series will be the support series for this one. Rumour has it that Dale Richardson, whose car burned during the rain halted NAPA 100 a few weeks ago, is building a new car and hopes to be ready in time for this event. Dale is a great competitor and this is good news indeed.
As you can see, the next couple of weeks are going to be busy, with action at every venue. Come on out and join us.
