Saturday night Chris Johnson and his staff had a huge task on their hands. All they had to do was run their regularly scheduled show, including a 100 lap Sportsman race and also a 100 lap Pro Stock race, rescheduled from a few weeks back. The true measure of a track's efficiency is how they perform in this situation. They not only pulled it off, but they did so in grand style. Dusk had barely fallen when the show was done. From start to finish, it took a mere 4 hours and 14 minutes by my clock. It was very impressive indeed.
The racing was good as well. The finishes were close in all races but the closest was the Street Stock feature which was won by Jack Lane in a three car photo finish. Glyn Nott again captured the big Sportsman feature. "I don't know what it is, but my car really comes in after thirty laps" he laughed afterward. Kirk Thibeau, from Presque Isle, Maine, won the Pro Stock event, guaranteeing himself entry into the Labour Day Pro Stock 250.
This Saturday the Carquest Pro Stock Tour invades the confines of Speedway 660 for their first of two trips to the Geary Woods. All the big guns will be there along with the front runners from their weekly Pro Stock series. This should be a good one and a chance to see if the repairs made to the Sandy Livingston car are finished.
Sunday afternoon the place to be is River Glade Speedway as the Maritime Legends Tour headlines the show. These motorcycle engine powered machines are quick and adapt well to the tight dimensions of the River Glade circuit. A full card of points racing is on the menu as well. For some reason, the show is always exciting at River Glade and I highly recommend this one.
All the tracks are hitting high gear now and with the prospect of a warm dry summer ahead, things are looking good. Now if we could only lower the price of fuel. This is causing some racers to forego the season altogether as they just can't afford it. Fuel costs are also keeping some fans away from the track as well but hopefully, the excitement of being there will overcome the expense.
Dale Earnhardt finally put it all together last weekend, ending his 76 race drought by winning in Michigan, albeit after running out of gas and coasting over the finish line. Sometimes though, it takes a bit of luck to go with a strong effort, to break out of a prolonged slump.
This week, the NASCAR boys go to Infinion Raceway for a road race. As usual, a lot of the cars will have substitute drivers (road race specialists) piloting the vehicles. It seems a little unfair to plunk these drivers into cars for these races but I guess that's the way to win. The other two NASCAR National Tours are at the Milwaiulkie mile this weekend and the racing is usually pretty exciting there. Speed channel has the Truck race Friday night while TSN has coverage of the Nationwide deal on Saturday.
